A Little About Me!

I know exactly when I got it. It was October 15, 1998. I got the Amelia Earhart Complex. Simply defined, the Amelia Earhart Complex is the sudden urge to get on an airplane and just disappear.

At the time I was 27-years-old and working 70 hours a week as the branch manager of a used-car dealership. I was the proud owner of two homes, one ulcer, and zero friends. My cellular phone bill was more than my mortgage. I knew a lot about racy cars, quick men, fast food, and short vacations. What eluded me were the very things that define a rich life: love, integrity, patience, and generosity. The only book I could have written five years ago would have been titled: "How to Be an Immature Defensive Control Freak and Still Make Lots of Money."

That’s when I met her. She was a 78-year-old woman who had traveled through 78 countries. Her experiences were her treasures; her memories were her children. Each year she and her husband chose a new country and explored it together. Their ages were always the same as the number of countries they had explored. That’s when I got the idea of “30 in 30.” I gave myself 3 years (until I was 30-years-old) to visit 30 countries.

Real change is never slow. I had a life everyone wanted, but me!

A few weeks later I left my job, I left my house, and I left my life. I traded my briefcase for a backpack. I traded my savings for an airplane ticket. My friends thought I had lost my mind. But, I am not crazy. My story, however, is.

Traveling through 30 countries, I spent more time with mosquitoes than movie stars (though I did snap photos of me with Cindy Crawford, Ron Howard, and Bill Clinton.)

More importantly, I was chased by an ostrich in Chile, the victim of a Toucan attack in Brazil, and I generously donated a pint of blood to the insects of Peru. I’ve climbed up volcanoes, fallen down glaciers, lied on beaches, stood on mountain tops, and jumped out of planes and into rivers.

Other accomplishments include becoming the star of a tango show in Argentina, walking down the red carpet for a Cannes Film Festival premiere in France, and sleeping as a guest on an Indian Prince’s $48 million dollar yacht.

In 1998, I left a boatload of work in East LA and 30 months later I landed on a yacht in the South of France. Now, five years later...the adventure continues.

I'm 32-years-old now. Intead of cramming myself back into a cubical, I've sold everything I own (both houses) and I'm still traveling the world. My friends ask me: "When are you going to buy a nice car?" (I drive a 87 Jeep Cherokee.) My answer: "My car starts everyday. For me, that is nice." Why would I want to work 50 weeks out of the year to afford a car I don't want?

I enjoy the finer things in life, but I don't define myself by them. I don't own much, but I have a lot of great memories.

Other Adventures Include:
• Trapezing through the rain-forest in Costa Rica
• Sand-skiing in Peru
• Hang-Gliding over Rio in Brazil
• Buying funky potions at the “Witch’s Market” in Bolivia
• Climbing an active volcano in Chile
• Watching a glacier calve in Argentina
