"Do not seek the truth, only cease to cherish opinions." -- Sankara, a Buddhist monk

298--Utah: Bryce Canyon & Zion
@ CherieSpotting     Jul 06 2005 - 18:36 PST
cherie writes: What’s a hoodoo? It sounds like a made-up word and looks like something out of a fairy tale. But if you’ve been to Bryce Canyon you know that hoodoos are the strange pillar-like rock formations left after the process of erosion. The scenery at Bryce Canyon is simultaneously bizarre and wild with the pinks and violets of manganese and the reds and yellows of iron. Carved over a period of 20 million years from the Claron Formation, the colorful limestone spires seem like a good place spot unicorns or trolls.

Hoodoos are form from the contraction and expansion of water to ice. The extreme temperatures of Bryce Canyon create hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles annually, fracturing the rocks, and letting the acidic rain carve new pinnacles. What ever you-do, don’t miss seeing a hoodoo!
