289--Florida: Drag Races in Key West 2005 @ CherieSpotting     Apr 26 2005 - 16:47 PST cherie writes: Life in Key West is never a drag. And Drag Racing isn’t what you think. In honor of the Conch Republic’s Independence Day, Key West’s favorite Queens put on their sassy-pants and raced each other to raise money for Helpline. Thousands of spectators lined the streets to cheer the girls on in the 7th Annual Conch Republic Drag Race. Key West is the only place you can watch a man sprinting down the street in feathers and sequins for a good cause. In all fairness, racers were handicapped according to the height of their heels (with a minimum requirement of 3-inches.) One gal was disqualified because she snuck on the course with sneakers. Other Queens crossed the finish line in their own shopping-carts…but it didn’t matter. Since the money raised went to charity, the judges were willing (and eager) to be bribed. After the Drag Race and Drag Olympics, the girls got their make-up messy with Foam Wrestling. Nothing like a stage full of bubbles to bring girls together! Here are the photos. Crowds gather up and down Duval St. It's fun to shop on Duval St. Look at how fast she manuvers her cart. You can do it! That's a Queen with a cart, now get out of her way! She was disqualified! She wasn't wearing heels. Doesn't everyone wear sequins and feathers to shop? She lost the race, but gained a hug. Big tires and high heels. Now this is a challenge! Shopping is dangerous business. Faster, faster, faster. What do you mean there's no such thing as a free ride? Ankle-busters. Ever try to run in pumps? He's got legs. Come on, you can make it. Go ladies! It's not whether you win or lose. In this race, the judges can be bribed. Do you think her hair is natural? Drag racing is serious business. Someone has her sassy-pants on. That's the way people from Key West say hello. It's a very friendly island. You try to stand in those heels! Work it! Make it burn. Slalom shopping. The girls go marching 2x2 hoorah! Hoorah! The princess lost her shoe! She's hard to pick out in a crowd. Watch those muscles flex. Amy gets a kiss. The final battle between the fastest runners. The Conch Republic Drag Queens gather near the stage. Who is going to get the trophy? Since the race is for charity, everyone is a winner! All sweaty, the Queens celebrate with a bubble-bath. The crowd gets bubble kisses. Good, clean fun! Strike a pose. The fun doesn't stop until the bubble machine does. No need to do laundry now. Everyone joins in on the fun!
