After 3 months of training, I came in 18th place in my division. My goal was to do the triathlon in under 2 hours. I finished in 1:43. As Charles Brenke said, "In the beginning it's hard to understand that the race is not against others but against that little voice in your head that tells you when to quit." A gang of friends came and cheered me on with contagious enthusiam and motivational signs. Here are the 2004 Long Beach Triathlon photos taken by Dustin and Greg. Go #751. Triathletes have to rise before the sun does. Little morning stretch to wake up. Who is ready to do a triathlon this morning? Beach birds. The water is just right, if you are wearing a wet suit. I think I'll just stay here a bit longer. I'm ready to swim! Dustin, Jean, Cherie and Eddy. Jean and Cherie. Kevin, Cherie and Chris. Greg and Cherie. Jean and Cherie. OK, I'll put on the goofy pink cap and look like a dork. The addition of goggles is very very sexy. Look at all those pink caps just ready to dive into the ocean. And they are off! That's just what the sea needed, a splash of pink. Pink invasion. Sea of pink. Furiously swimming. There's the first bouy. Spectators cheer on the athletes. That's me! Coming out of the water. Ready to run up the beach? Coming out of the swim and up the beach. Just what everyone wants to do after an intense ocean swim, run barefoot in wet sand! In thew swim, Cherie catches up to guys who started two waves ahead of her. (Notice the red cap!) Cherie in the transition area. Time for the 11-mile bike. Of course, a hill is first! There's Cherie! Crowds watch as the cyclists make 2 loops around the course. People cheer as the athletes race by. Ready or not, here I come. The race heats up. Part of Cherie's fan club. Cherie jamming (struggling?) on the bike. A little faster now. A wave from Cherie. Around the loop again. There Cherie goes. Dustin is a head and shoulders above other photographers. Coming to the end of the bike! Cherie on the run. The last 3 miles. A little tired, but still running hard. I'm almost home! Cherie at the finish line! I finished my first triathlon!
