349--Italy: Dead Man's Party in Roman Crypt
@ Site News     Apr 27 2006 - 12:56 PST
Would the deceased Capuchin monks approve of this bone-chilling art?

Would the deceased Capuchin monks approve of this bone-chilling art?

Cherie writes: There’s no bones about it, there’s something strange about coming face to face with a skeleton. In Rome, there’s a crypt that only the most dedicated travelers seek. It’s called the “Cripta dei Cappuccini”, or the Capuchin Crypt.

Inside the crypt you are confronted with thousands of skulls, the remains of 4,000 monks. Since these Capuchin friars died between 1528 and 1870, their flesh has long since rotten away. In other words, even though there are bones piled up everywhere, the crypt doesn’t have the lingering stench of death.

Even though the crypt smells nice, staring at a bunch of friar’s bones borders on creepy. Hanging out with the dead monks I thought: this is truly a dead man’s party. I wonder what tales this crypt has to tell?

340--New Zealand: Black Water Rafting in Waitomo Caves

Cherie abseiling into one of Waitomo's glow worm infested caves.

cherie writes: Waitomo Caves are known for the thousands of glow worms that line the walls like underground constellations. Colin, Sarah, Crystal, Marsell, Remco & I explored the caves with our guide Morgan.

First we abseiled into the cave in the frumpiest looking outfits you can imagine. Then we grabbed inner tubes and floated through the caverns trying to stay away from the waterfalls and eels. We also learned that "black-water rafting" is just a fancy way of saying "floating in a cave".

Here are the photos from our latest amazing Waitomo Caves adventure.

176--California: Aviatrix in a 1940 Stearman

cherie writes: Travel back in time. Back to the days where men wore trousers and women swooned. The year was 1940, and the first plane Navy pilots flew was a bi-plane called a Stearman. Built by Boeing, it was called a Model 75. The Navy called it an N2S-3.

Gabe Lopez takes passengers for the ride of their life in his bright yellow Navy Stearman. When juxtaposed against a blue sky, it looks like a model-airplane; as if someone from the ground should be operating the controls.

I was hoping that Gabe would thrill me with some steep turns and tricks, so I prepared myself: I ate an ice-cream right before. I figured if something was going to come back up—it better taste good.

153--South Africa: Great White Shark Diving

I took this photo of a Great White Shark with a cheap disposable underwater camera.

cherie writes: “You are perfect shark bait!” Brian, the captain, screamed as he welcomed me on his boat. “Most ladies these days are too skinny. You’re a bit squishy, which is just what the sharks love.”

I’m okay with being called a scuba diver, or even an underwater photographer. But I’m not so sure I like the bi-line, shark bait.

145--No Man's Land: Bungee Jump off Vic Falls Bridge

Cherie leaping off the 2nd highest bungee jump in the world at Victoria Falls Bridge.

cherie writes: Bungee Jump off Victoria Falls Bridge

Everyone wanted to see us do it--jump off the second highest Bungee Jump in the world. All thirteen of our tour group clamored over the Zimbabwe boarder with cameras in hand to see if we’d really jump.

Victoria Falls Bridge is in no man’s land--between Zambia and Zimbabwe. No country would ever allow its citizens to jump off a bridge that high. Gambling is one thing, suicide is another. But when you find a tiny strip of land between two countries where no laws apply—anything goes. In other words, for $50 US, you can learn to fly.

Cherie looks like a natural in the driver's seat. Her quick reaction time and comfort behind the wheel impress everyone.

cherie writes: Here is the FCT (Famous Cherie Test) to see if you are a race-car driver:

1. If you put nitrogen in your tires (instead of air) you may be a race-car driver.
2. If your driver’s window is mesh (instead of glass) you may be a race-car driver.
3. If your gas is blue (instead of gas-colored) you may be a race-car driver.
4. If your car expenses are more than your home expenses, you may be a race-car driver.
5. If you can change all four tires and fill up with gas in nine seconds, you may be a race-car driver.

121--Turks and Caicos: The Hitch-hiker

Who is that in the truck behind me? I hope it is not a scary man!

Who is that in the truck behind me? I hope it is not a scary man!

cherie writes: The Hitch-Hiker

People who pick up hitch-hikers always get a bad rap. The helpful drivers are depicted as murderers and rapists instead of the good Samaritans they usually are. But what if you get into the wrong car at the wrong time and your worst nightmares materialize?
