353--California: 2006 Bay to Breakers--Safari Style

Cherie goes wild in the streets of San Francisco in the 2006 Bay to Breaker race!

Cherie writes: Our “African Safari” was led this year by King Ted. To help the “dark continent” see the light of San Francisco, Ted and the gang built a giant elephant float loaded to the trunk with jungle juice. In a race across San Francisco, hydration is important!

Then our Safari gang paraded across the streets of San Francisco as hunters, warriors, zebras, gorillas, and wild cats! We even had our very own dung beetles to clean up after the elephant mess!

In this parade, it didn’t matter what color you are—red, green or orange. You just needed a big smile and an open mind. If you are “clothes-minded”, this might not be your scene. Prudes beware…there is a bit of nudity in these shots. Here are my 2006 Bay to Breaker photos.

339--New Zealand: How to become a Zorbonaut

Cherie gets ready to roll as she enters the giant plastic zorb in New Zealand.

cherie writes: What's a zorb? It's a plastic ball that you get zipped into. If you opt for the hydro-zorb, you get a bucket of complimentary water to slosh around with you inside.

But there are many ways to zorb. You can zorb solo or with up to two friends. You can zorb zig-zag or straight. And you can zorb wet or dry! I did a wet solo zig-zag!

My Canadian friends Colin, Sarah and Crystal joined me in the quest to get wet and dizzy. We did the ZORB at the Agrodome in Rotorua, New Zealand. Here are our Zorb photos.

271--Singapore, Sentosa & Crazy Haw Par Villa

Cherie at Haw Paw Villa, a strange, fantastic, unusual, and gaudy Chinese theme park in Singapore.

cherie writes: Singapore is an extremely clean and fairly expensive country with about 3 million people. Margaret and I stayed with Brian (Margaret's friend) and spent a few days seeing some of Singapore’s sights.

We started with Haw Par Villa, a crazy Chinese theme park. Margaret and I turned into little girls and played with all the strange and gaudy statues. Some of the statues were quite disturbing, but the most unsettling attraction was the “10 Courts of Hell” which demonstrates what happens to you in your after-life if you are bad.

During your life if you curse, you will be thrown into a tree of knives when you die. For the misuse of books, your body will be sawn in two (but who cares, you are dead…right?)

261--Thailand: Intro to Bamboo Rafting

We had to use bamboo rafts to get from one village to the next while trekking in the hill-tribes. *Photo by Yorham.

cherie writes: Diane, Hilda and I were trekking amongst the hill-tribes of Northern Thailand when we found ourselves spending the night with the Aka tribe. The next village was accessible by two ways—an elephant or a flimsy bamboo raft. Ready for a new adventure, we loaded all of our belongings onto make-shift bamboo rafts, protected our cameras with sturdy zip-lock baggies, and we let the fun begin.

If life-insurance companies had any sense they’d deny coverage to people who: 1. sky-dive 2. scuba dive or 3. bamboo raft.

Thai Cooking School Gone Wrong. Cherie learns the flambe technique on Day 1.

cherie writes: After I came to the realization that I am not going to lose weight in Thailand, I decided to sign up for a Thai cooking course and finally learn how to cook!

Diane, Hilda and I (and our new travel buddies: Hannah, Leighton, Kirsty, Amanda, Lee, Yorham and Edna) joined us for the cooking class. There are over 30 cooking schools in Chiang Mai, Thailand and we chose to learn at: The Master, a Thai Chef Cookery Course taught by the renowned chefs Permpoon and Suriyan Nabnian.

Suriyan, or “Yan” as we called him, considers himself a “culinary evangelist.” First Yan took us to a local Thai market where he taught us how to select the right ingredients for the 5 Thai dishes (and one dessert!) we were about to learn how to prepare.

187--Jost Van Dyke: Spinnaker Sailing at Soggy $ Bar

cherie writes: John is a crazy captain with crazy hats. He has a stockpile of silly hats to choose from and I picked the Wizard hat (for you Mike) and then I was imbibed with the ability to answer any question correctly. Normally one would charge for a service like that, but I gave away the “right answers to everything” for free.

Jon took a gang of us (Dolly, Joe, Lou, Laura, Michelle, Carol, Bill and I) for a day-sail on his Beneteau 38 named Tempest. We headed for Jost Van Dyke, a tiny island with a few hundred residents. I’m pretty sure they were all at Soggy $ Bar the day we were there.

cherie writes: Location: Oudtshoorn, South Africa. Four ladies (Kristi, Carter, Renee and Cherie) attempt to ride the largest bird in the world--the ostrich! We spent the day at the Highgate Ostrich Farm learning ostrich facts like these:
* When you eat an ostrich filet, you are eating the ostrich's knee.
* One ostrich egg is equal to 24 chicken eggs.
* An adult ostrich weighs about 220 pounds and can run up to 80 km/h.
* The World Record for eating a hard-boiled ostrich egg is 6 minutes, 40 seconds.
