396: California: Mom's 60th Birthday Party

Celebrating my Mom's 60th Birthday at my sister Michelle's house.

Celebrating my Mom's 60th Birthday at my sister Michelle's house.

cherie writes: It’s time to pig out for my mom’s 60th Birthday! According to Chinese astrology, my mom (Bev) was born during the year of the pig. (That’s what I blame my poor eating habits on—that I was born during the Chinese year-of-the-pig, too!) The year-of-the-pig (which happens every 12-years) is an auspicious time to have a child (according to the Chinese), but 2007 is the year of the Golden Pig, which only happens once every 60-years (or once in a life-time!)

The 12 animal gods on the Chinese zodiac (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig) blend with the 5 elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) you get a 60-year cycle.

Here are the photos of my mom’s 60th birthday party, held at my sister Michelle’s house!

354--California: Squirrel Hunting with the Family
@ CherieSpotting     May 25 2006 - 03:05 PST
Feeding the squirrels in San Simeon, California. (Yes, Kylie touched the squirrel!)

Feeding the squirrels in San Simeon, California. (Yes, Kylie touched the squirrel!)

Cherie writes: Family vacations are about the simple things in life like feeding peanuts to squirrels in the morning and hunting for moonstones in the afternoon.

This year we spent our family vacation camping along the shores of San Simeon in Central California. We raced bikes down lonely isolated roads, splashed in the ocean’s refreshing waves and told stories over a smoldering campfire. But of all the silly activities we did, just being together was the most fun.

352--California: Elephant Seals, 2 Tons of Fun
@ CherieSpotting     May 24 2006 - 05:43 PST
Elephant seals spash and play along the shore in Central California.

Elephant seals spash and play along the shore in Central California.

Cherie writes: What should you do if you see a Mirounga augustirostris on the beach? Take a photo of course! Commonly known at the Elephant Seal, these massive mammals flop onto the beach twice a year in California—once to mate and another time to molt.

These 2 ½ ton mammals are the largest aquatic carnivores in existence. These big guys have powerful lungs and are great divers. They can stay under water for more than 80 minutes (more than any other mammal) and dive to depths of over 5187-ft (making the elephant seal the world’s deepest diving vertebrate.)

The pups are called weaners and the baby elephant seals look like little puppies. But the elephant seals loose their cuteness as they age—they have hairy flippers, no ears and they grow noses down to their mouths. If you like hairy appendages, thick blubber & pendulous noses—take a peek at these Elephant Seal photos:

312: California: Family & Friends

Pregnant? It can't be! For Allison, it's true. But Cherie's belly has the help of a couple bicycle helmets.

Pregnant? It can't be! For Allison, it's true. But Cherie's belly has the help of a couple bicycle helmets.

cherie writes: Joyce Brothers said: "When you look at your life, the greatest happinesses are family happinesses."

My family keeps growing everyday, which means I keep getting happier!

Rebecca is pregnant with the next Sogsti, and my close friend Allison is pregnant with her first child. As Elizabeth Stone said "Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking outside your body."

These photos of my friends and family celebrate the beauty and simplicity of a child's life. You'll see lots of squishy hugs and bursting smiles! As Milton Berle said, "Laughter is an instant vacation."

308--California: Santa Cruz Family Vacation

Hands up! Cherie and niece Sophie on the roller-coaster at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Hands up! Cherie and niece Sophie on the roller-coaster at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

cherie writes: Favorite conversation stumbled upon at our family vacation:
Sophie (age 4): Let’s jump in the pool!
Ellie (age 6): We have to wait for the adults before we can go in.
Sophie: Why? I can swim.
Ellie: Haven’t you ever drowned?
Sophie: No, have you?
Ellie: No, but my brother Tanner drowned 3 times!

My parents, sisters, nieces and nephews gathered in Santa Cruz, California for a family vacation. We camped at a KOA campground and spent the week golfing, not-catching squirrels, splashing in the pool, playing in the park, and riding bikes. We topped the week off by making our bellies fat and our wallets thin at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Luckily, the only fights we got into were with foam noodles. Considering there was only one trip to the emergency room, this family vacation was a huge success!

242--California: Pa's Pumpkin Patch
@ Book & Movie Reviews     Oct 15 2004 - 07:27 PST
One of us is ready for Halloween. Here I'm with my niece Gracie (AKA Snow White).

One of us is ready for Halloween. Here I'm with my niece Gracie (AKA Snow White).

cherie writes: “Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is serious.”—Brendan Gill. In other words, laugh more and worry less.

If you’re in need of a smile, the perfect place to get the giggles going is a pumpkin patch. Pumpkins are funny—they are fat, orange and you really only see them one month a year. Halloween is my favorite holiday and my favorite pumpkin patch is Pa’s. It’s not just a bunch of overpriced pumpkins scattered in straw. Pa’s Pumpkin Patch has rides, slides, bumper boats, pony rides and even a petting zoo. It’s almost like a mini-fair complete with carnival games.

My parents, sisters, nieces and nephews spent the afternoon at Pa’s sorting through the wild gourds and strangely shaped squash. After a few train rides and loops on the carousel, we headed for home where we dressed up in our Halloween best and pranced around. These days kids aren’t witches, ghosts and goblins—they are princesses and power rangers.

Pa’s Pumpkin Patch is located on 2nd and PCH in Seal Beach, CA.

Ellie (5) sits in the Captain's chair on the Harbor Cruise near the Balboa Fun Zone, Newport Beach.

cherie writes: I took Ellie (5) and Tanner (3) to the Balboa Fun Zone to go on a Harbor Cruise and play on the Fun Zone rides. It was a day filled with aching bellies—too much laughter and too much ice-cream.

First, I told my niece and nephew that we were going on a boat-ride to see the seals. Of course Ellie asked: “Why aren’t the seals in Seal Beach?” I responded with my stock answer: “I don’t know.”

Then Ellie said she wanted to tell me the “3 Most Important Rules.”

1) Be fearless.
2) Always do what your Mommy says.
3) Don’t tell other people that their clothes are ugly.

Ellie's advice seemed like pretty good rules to live by.
